National Garbage Man Day!

National Garbage Man Day

During the week of June 17th people all over the world  join together to thank the women and men who work to keep our neighborhoods and streets safe and clean!

As you can imagine, the world would be a disgusting place without the garbage man. For many years people burned waste, fed it to animals, buried it, and most commonly, tossed it over their shoulder. Some cities became buried, and built over the waste, and others pioneered new ways to save their cities from vermin and disease. Recycling began as a necessity and ended up in present day as a responsibility to the environment.

Did you know?

  • The first landfill is developed when Knossos, Crete in 3000 BC!
  • The design for the garbage trucks that we see today was introduced in the 1929.
  • The big dumpsters that we see on the site of most businesses was invented by ... George Dempster in 1935.

How to celebrate Garbage Man Day:

  • Send a thank you card
  • Make some cookies for them
  • Give them a bottle of water - it’s hot out there!
  • Give them a hand
  • Recycle more
  • Just say "thanks"
