The sanitary sewer is a system of underground pipes and tunnels that carry sewage from bathrooms, sinks and kitchens to a wastewater treatment plant where it is filtered, treated and discharged.
The stormwater drain only carries water runoff from snow and rain. It is not designed to carry sewage or accept hazardous wastes. Storm drain inlets are typically found in curbs and low-lying outdoor areas.
