Police recruits attend the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy for a 26-week basic training program. Upon graduation, police officers are assigned to the Field Training Program for further instruction and evaluation. Successful officers embark on the rewarding and demanding career serving the citizens of Manassas as a respected police officer. After serving a minimum of three years in the patrol division, officers are eligible to apply for appointment to the Career Development Program and specialized assignments and duties, including:

How Do I Join?
The Police Department periodically conducts the hiring process, and applicants undergo an extensive screening process. Interested individuals should complete a written application. The hiring process includes:
  • Personal history statement
  • Physical agility test
  • Extensive background and reference investigation
  • Polygraph examination
  • Psychology screening
  • Personal interview
  • Medical examination
  • Conditional job offer and drug screening
  • One-year probationary period
