The City of Manassas has been honored with the following awards and recognitions.


2016 Awards & Recognitions

 
  • Captain Andrew Carver received the Merit Valor Award from the Prince William Chamber of Commerce for saving the life of a gentleman on the jogging path near his home.
  • Senior Police Officer J.R. Lehman and Senior Police Officer Y. Sturman both received Bronze Medals of Valor from the Prince William Chamber of Commerce for saving the life of a suicidal gentleman.
  • Brenda Cogdell, the City's Risk Manager was elected to the National PRIMA Board of Directors and will be sworn in June 6, 2016 at the conference.

  • 2015 Digital Cities Award
  • 2015 Valor Awards - Senior Detective Michael Gemmell and Senior Detective Amilcar Barahona won the Investigative Merit Award and Senior Police Officer Erica Bauckman won the Merit Award for Valor.
  • Tree City USA from the Arbor Day Foundation and the U.S. Forest Service
  • The City of Manassas Fire and Rescue System was awarded the Agency of Excellence designation from the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services
  • Master Technician Matthew Fox with the City of Manassas Fire and Rescue Department was honored with the award for Outstanding Pre-hospital Provider by the Northern Virginia Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Council
  • Excellence in Waterworks Operations/Performance Award by the Commonwealth of Virginia Office of Drinking Water
  • The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission awarded the City of Manassas the Sesquicentennial Committee Leadership Award for the area’s efforts in commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War during the past seven years
  • First the Housing Choice Voucher program was awarded 100% on their SEMAP audit.
  • Two Manassas City CPS workers were recognized for achieving 100% compliance in seeing the victim child in CPS investigation or family assessments.  Only 18 out of 120 localities in the state had workers recognized. One of which was of course Manassas.
  • Distinguished Budget Presentation Award The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA)
  • Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA)
  • Discover Prince William/Manassas awarded Program Coordinator Doug Horhota the Stellar Service Award. The Manassas City Schools presented Horhota with a certificate recognizing his partnership with City schools. 
  • Planner Allison Whitworth achieved a Certified Zoning Official recognition from the Virginia Association of Zoning Officials.
  • Jamie Collins received a $1,000 scholarship to attend the 2015 International Code Council Annual Conference and Public Comment Hearings in Long Beach, California.
  • The Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) recently gave Manassas a Three—one of the highest ratings—for ensuring Building Code Effectiveness in one and two family residential properties. The ratings agency also awarded Manassas an even better Two rating for the quality of commercial and industrial property building inspections. The high ratings will translate into insurance savings for city property owners. Only four percent of Virginia municipalities received a Two rating for commercial and industrial inspections, and 24 percent received a Three for residential inspections. The ISO report also commended Manassas for having 100 percent of its inspectors professionally certified.

  • Virginia Main Street Milestone Achievement Award with Historic Manassas, Inc. for volunteer investment in downtown revitalization efforts of more than 60,000 volunteers
  • The Manassas Regional Airport won the Southeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executive’s (AAAE) 2014 General Aviation Project of the Year Award, Airfield Category for our Runway 34R Extension and Related Work.
  • The Manassas Animal Adoption Center received the highest rating possible from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service.
  • Liberia Plantation was named the Outstanding Preservation Plan during the American Planning Association’s Virginia Chapter Annual Awards
  • Award of Excellence from the Virginia Downtown Development Association for the Main Street Streetscapes project
  • Distinguished Budget Presentation Award The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) - this is the 10th year the City has received this award
  • Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA)
  • Outstanding EMS Agency Award by the Northern Virginia EMS Council
  • 2014 Valor Awards - Officer Trey Cram, for saving the life of a one-year-old child and Police Officer First Class Brett Stumpf for putting himself and his vehicle in harms way to save others from a driver having a medical episode
  • 2014 CALEA Accreditation for Manassas City Police Department - Gold Standard with Excellence
  • The Century Award for Utilities from American Public Power Association for providing dependable electricity for 100 years
  • RP3 Reliable Power Provider Award from APPA (Platinum) for electric reliability
  • Outstanding New Emergency Management Professional - Amelia Gagnon - by the Virginia Emergency Management Association
  • Named one of the Safest Cities (communities) in Virginia by SafeWise.com
  • Communitas Award for Public Responsibility for the Neighborhood Services Division work with Manassas City Public Schools with support from the AmeriCorps Vista program

  • Savvy Award for website and design by the City-County Communications and Marketing Association (3CMA).
  • Guinness World Record holder for the Largest Game of Red Light/Green Light
  • 2013 Prince William Chamber Business Award to the City of Manassas and Manassas City Public Schools for working together to create the Joint Capital Improvement Plan.
  • Silver Award for Excellence in Water Treatment Performance by the Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water
  • Hermes Gold Award for website and design from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals
  • Outstanding Achievement in Innovation Award from the Alliance for Innovation in Government for the Joint CIP Program

  • Valor Award – Chief Keen, Sgt. Rodriquez, Ofc. Black, Ofc. Shields - for entering a home where a dangerous criminal had already attacked two people, securing the scene and rendering aid to the victims

  • Det. Cindy van Noppen who has been recognized as Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by SAFI (Security Association of Financial Institutions) for her exemplary investigation of financial crimes.
